Christ Conscious Practice 02: Memorization
My grandfather, Daddy B, loved quoting quotes, chapters of scripture, and poetry. His all-time favorite was “The Raven” by Edgar Allen Poe. Let me tell you, nothing brings more holiday cheer than “The Raven” quoted at Christmas lunch. :)
Memorization seems to be a lost art form unless we count songs or self-written poetry jams. We might have a cliche or two that come to mind, but we rely on the ability to seek and find online for the most part.
The Christ practiced memorization. Early in his ministry, there is a story of him being led into the desert to be challenged by dark forces.
After 40 days of fasting, the Tempter appeared. Knowing Jesus’ condition. Knowing his state. Know his want.
“If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”
Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”
Two more challenges came, and two more times, Christ replied, “It is written…”
How did he face the test? The recall of the Deuteronomy text he had memorized.
Deuteronomy has more than 23,000 words in English. It's 31 chapters long, and that is just one book of Torah - which he most likely memorized as a child and which aided him as a Rabbi.
This was more than a school assignment it was a spiritual practice.
Memorization helps us in so many ways to align and enter Christ Consciousness
01: Internalizing Divine Truth
When ancient texts settle into the heart, it roots us in the Absolute’s promises, The guidance, the voice. It becomes a light on our path, carried silently within. “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6) is no longer just ink on a scroll; it becomes a constant companion, a whisper of truth in every dark hour, a guiding star when we feel lost.
02: Strengthening Mind and Spirit
Memorized truths deepen, becoming the foundation upon which we stand and live with purpose and integrity. It reminds us of who we are when our soul shakes. It stabilizes our mind when it swirls with doubts and uncertainty.
03 Anchoring Prayer and Praise
Knowing scripture by heart turns prayer into a song on repeat. Verses like “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want” (Psalm 23:1) open prayers with words of trust, weaving praise and gratitude into the rhythm of daily life.
04: Opening the Soul in Reflection
Sacred texts call us into quiet contemplation. Verses like “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10) become invitations to stillness, to listen, to know. In these meditative moments, the memorized words come alive, drawing us into a quiet communion with the Creator, where the heart hears what the world cannot because it’s on a different frequency.
05: Transforming from Within
As we internalize the words, they shape us from the inside out. The Word has the power to renew and transform (Romans 12:2), and as we immerse ourselves, we find our thoughts, actions, and desires more aligned with Christ Consciousness. Ohn 1 says, “The Word became flesh and dwelled among us.” When we memorize, those words become flesh, and spiritual principles come to life through us.
We do not memorize to judge, condemn, or use texts as a weapon of harm. It is for realization, contemplation, transformation, and meditation as we discover more about the heart and mind of the Christ.
Election Response
Whew! That was some U.S. election! Since then, a range of emotions have been shared, especially on social media. Brokenness, fear, shame, rage, and collapse to celebration, elation, confidence, and hope.
Since our aim is to live a 1010 Life - life to the full - how do we respond to this or any election? What should we be thinking and doing? Here are a few thoughts.
Did Jesus Not Care What People Thought About Him?
I always get cracked up with Jesus’ response to the question, “Everyone is looking for you.” The reply has a lot to teach us about not caring so much about what other people think. Check it out.
QUESTion
Select a sacred text to memorize. Why is it meaningful to you and feels like a good addition to your memory?
Blessings!
Paul

The 1010 Life Letter is a weekly life and spiritual growth update based on the spirit of John 10:10 "…I have come that you may have life and have it to the full!”
As a student of scripture and spirituality for almost half a century I share what I am discovering about living with joy and peace. The purpose is to translate ancient texts into context and integrate to experience a 1010 life.
